Day One Tasks
Finding your "Adopted" city and recording weather and astronomy data

1. Record the weather for today.
Task 1 – Finding your city
- Find your state and city, searching for it online.
- Make a dot to represent your city on your blank map.
- Write the name of your city next to it.
- Using a yellow colored pencil, color in your state on the map.
Task 2 – Start Recording your city’s weather and Astronomy data
1. Record the weather for today.
- Download / Open the "Adopt a City Weather Spreadsheet" at the top of this page.
- Add your information on the tab for your adopted city (add your city to the tab name)
- Fill in excel sheet for today's date
- Add the zip code to your map.
- Fill in all data for today on the spreadsheet
Day 2 TASKS
Task 3 – Latitude and Longitude
Task 4 – Time zones:
- Complete the latitude/longitude worksheet by writing in all the cities at their correct location
- Add your City to the bottom of the "Latitude and Longitude" worksheet. What is the latitude and longitude of your city?
- You can find this on the weather website
(link) in the top left corner, above the current temperature. (click on the temperature) - Record the latitude and longitude next to your city, add your "Adopted" city to the map above.

Task 4 – Time zones:
- Record today’s Weather & Astronomy Data on your Weather Spreadsheet.(link)
- Date the first map on the mini maps packet (Upper Right) and fill in the fronts in the correct colors and label, by going to www.weather.com and clicking on maps, and classic weather maps
- What time zone is your city in? The information is posted on the weather site, can you find it?
- Using this website (link/pdf) draw lines on your Big Map From Day 1 to represent each time zone, and shade in. Identify and label each one.
- Answer the following questions by adding it to your map:
- How many time zones are there in the United States?
- Is your city in the same timezone as Michigan?
- If not, what is the difference in time?

Task 5 – State Facts
- Record today’s Weather & Astronomy Data on your Weather Spreadsheet.(link)
- Put today's Date next to a second map on the mini maps packet (from yesterday) and fill in the fronts in the correct colors and label, by going to www.weather.com and clicking on maps, and classic weather maps
- Complete the State Facts word document By clicking and downloading it from below. Use the links below to help. Complete your document on your laptop, print it, and give it to me Or save it as "State Facts" and send it to me as an email attachment.

- Record today’s Weather, yesterday’s Hi/Lo/Precipitation, & Astronomy Data (link) on excel spreadsheet.
- Put today's Date next to a third map on the mini maps packet and fill in the fronts in the correct colors and label, by going to www.weather.com and clicking on maps, and classic weather maps
- Weather Symbols Reference Handout (link) is located on the back of your mini map packet.
- Practice using weather station symbols – worksheet
- Create a Weather Station Model (WSM) for your city and Richmond on your mini-map (pdf)
- On your mini-map, lightly color in any areas of precipitation according to the national radar (link) using the colors shown.
- Be sure you can see the 48 continental states on the map at once
- Make a key to show areas of rain (green) and snow (blue)
